90-year-old woman living in a shed gets electricity bill of Rs 1 lakh

Power Minister K J George stated that the inflated bill was due to a meter glitch, and Girijamma was not obligated to pay the amount. GESCOM officials confirmed it was due to an erroneous meter reading.

Girijamma, a 90-year-old resident of Bhagyanagar in Koppal City, was left astounded when she received an exorbitant electricity bill amounting to Rs 1 lakh. Living in a modest shed with only three bulbs at her home.

She used to get a bill of Rs 70-80 per month, the shock of such an extraordinary bill came as a great surprise to her.

“I have only three bulbs in the house, and my bills never cross Rs 80. But I have got Rs 1 lakh this time,” she told to media. Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company Limited (GESCOM) responded to the viral tweet showcasing the erroneous bill and said it would rectify the issue.

Power Minister K J George stated that the inflated electricity bill received by Girijamma was the result of a meter glitch. Consequently, she was relieved of any obligation to pay the exorbitant amount.

Officials from GESCOM promptly visited Girijamma’s residence. Executive engineer Rajesh conducted an inspection of the power meter and confirmed that the erroneous meter reading was the cause of the inflated bill. He assured Girijamma that she did not have to pay the bill, bringing a sense of relief to her. Girijamma expressed her gratitude to the officer and the media for their assistance in resolving the issue.
