Delhi painter’s hands restored through organ donation and surgical expertise

A painter who tragically lost both hands in an accident is on the verge of resuming his craft, thanks to the surgical expertise of a team of doctors in Delhi and the organ donation commitment of a woman that impacted four lives.

This 45-year-old individual, marking the first successful bilateral hand transplant in Delhi, is set to be discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital tomorrow. His life took a devastating turn when he lost both hands in a train accident in 2020, and being from an underprivileged background, the future seemed bleak.

However, a miraculous turn of events unfolded. The hands of Meena Mehta, the former administrative head of a prominent South Delhi school, who was declared brain-dead, became the solution for the 45-year-old. Ms. Mehta, in her lifetime, had pledged her organs for use after her demise. Her kidneys, liver, and corneas went on to transform the lives of three other individuals, while her hands rekindled the dreams of a painter who faced a profound setback.

This remarkable feat wouldn’t have been achievable without the dedicated efforts of a team of doctors who undertook the formidable task. The surgery, lasting over 12 hours, intricately connected every artery, muscle, tendon, and nerve between the donor’s hands and the recipient’s arms. The commitment and hard work paid off, and in a poignant moment captured in a photograph, the double thumbs-up from the painter symbolized the restoration of his hands and aspirations.
