IndiGo’s In-Flight Meals Stir Sodium Content Debate

Recent incidents have placed IndiGo Airlines at the epicenter of a health-related issue. In a video that has gone viral, Revant Himatsingka, a YouTuber and health influencer going by the handle Food Pharmer, asserts that some meals offered on IndiGo flights have higher sodium content than Maggi noodles.

According to Himatsingka’s video, IndiGo’s Upma has 50% more sodium than Maggi, its Poha has 83% more sodium, and its Dal Chawal has the same amount of sodium as the well-known instant noodles. Given that Maggi noodles have frequently been criticized for having a high sodium level, this similarity has drawn criticism.

IndiGo has responded to the accusations by saying that its food preparations follow the guidelines established by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The airline stressed that the salt content of its meals is within acceptable bounds and that they are prepared using traditional Indian culinary techniques.

The FSSAI states that an average adult should not consume more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day, in line with worldwide health standards. Approximately 860 mg of salt is included in one serving of Maggi noodles, which makes up a sizable amount of the daily allowance. Consuming too much salt raises blood pressure and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Customers’ concerns have grown as a result, particularly for those who fly regularly and depend on in-flight meals.

While pre-packaged food on every airline seems to have a greater content of sodium as per daily requirements, several airline operators are taking steps to address the concerns regarding the sodium content in their in-flight meals.
