UP police will now administer crime according to the Hindu calendar

As per the circular, the occurrence of the new moon is anticipated on August 16, September 14, and October 14. Officials are advised to remain vigilant during the week leading up to and following these dates.

Uttar Pradesh(Up) Director General of Police (DGP) Vijay Kumar has directed the police officers of the state to use the Hindu Calendar, that is, ‘panchang, to keep an eye on crime.

In a circular that was issued on the 14th of August, the DGP said that the analysis of previous records shows that crimes rose at night, one week before and one week after ‘amavasaya’.

Amavasaya is the new moon night, when the night is very dark. This is a night when the moon is not fully visible. It refers to the first new moon night of the first quarter of the lunar month. According to Hindu astrology, during Amavasaya, the energies of ignorance, i.e., tamas, are at their peak. This night is not considered auspicious, and it is said that any auspicious or new activity should not be started on this day.

“On analyzing the incidents that happened in all the districts of the state at the headquarters level, it was found that more incidents happened at night one week before and one week after the new moon date of the Hindu calendar. This analysis should be done every month at the level of senior police officers,” stated the circular.

Stating the dates of amavasya, the circular said that the new moon is set to occur on August 16, September 14, and October 14, and officers should remain alert a week before and after it.

The circular further advised crime mapping and effective patrolling at night, one week before and after amavasya. Focusing on crime prevention, it stated that effective crime prevention is at the top of the priority list of the police.

“Through strong policing, an environment of security has to be established among the common citizens in the state. For this, it is necessary that night patrolling be done more and more effectively, so that the general public can have a sense of confidence in their security”, the circular said.

Further, the DGP also asked the police officers to identify the criminal hotspots and map the incidents of crime so they could be curtailed effectively.
