‘Barbie’ makes $1 Billion, becomes first woman-directed movie to do so

In a statement, Warner Bros. said the movie has taken in $459 million from domestic theatres — counting the US & Canada — and another $572.1 million overseas since it hit theatres

Warner Bros. Pictures has proudly revealed that “Barbie” has surged past a remarkable milestone, crossing the $1 billion mark in global box office ticket sales since its dazzling debut on July 21.

In an official announcement, Warner Bros. conveyed that the whimsical and comedic masterpiece has collected a substantial $459 million from theatres within the United States and Canada, alongside an impressive $572.1 million from international screenings.

Adding to the success, the brilliant writer and director of “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig, who was previously nominated for an Oscar, has achieved an unprecedented distinction. She is now celebrated as the first female filmmaker to independently break the billion-dollar barrier, an accomplishment lauded by Warner Bros.

This past weekend marked the movie’s successful third stint in theatres. During this timeframe, “Barbie” amassed a substantial $127 million in box office revenue on a global scale, encompassing the Friday-to-Sunday window. Impressively, $53 million of this sum originated from domestic audiences, while a further $74 million poured in from international fans.

Jeff Goldstein, who spearheads the role of President of Domestic Distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures, alongside Andrew Cripps, the President of International Distribution, were both left astounded by the phenomenal performance of “Barbie.” In a joint statement, they admitted, “As distribution leaders, we seldom find ourselves at a loss for words regarding a film’s achievements, but ‘Barbie’ has transcended even our most optimistic projections.”

Notably, “Barbie” has now attained the second-highest ticket sales for the current year. The reigning champion for 2023 remains “The Super Mario Bros,” which dominated the scene after its April release, amassing an impressive $1.357 billion in global box office receipts.
