RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das tops the rank with an “A+” in Global Central Banker Report, PM Modi lauds his efforts

Das has been placed at the top of the list of three central bank governors who have been rated A+ for inflation control and economic growth in 2023.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been rated ‘A+’ in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023, the central bank has announced. Taking to X, RBI tweeted, “We are happy to announce that Governor Shaktikanta Das has been rated “A+” in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023. Das has been placed at the top of the list of three central bank governors who have been rated A+”.

Expressing his delight on X, PM Modi congratulated Das on this wonderful achievement and said, “Congratulations to RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. This is a proud moment for India, reflecting our financial leadership on the global stage. His dedication and vision continue to strengthen our nation’s growth trajectory.”

Shaktikanta Das, along with his counterparts from Switzerland and Vietnam, received the top “A+” ratings in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023 for exceptional performance in inflation control, economic growth, currency stability, and interest rate management. “The Bank Governors who earned an ‘A+’ grade in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023 are Shaktikanta Das (India), Thomas J. Jordan (Switzerland), Nguyen Thi Hong (Vietnam),” an official statement issued by Global Finance read.

The report emphasizes the crucial role of central banks in addressing inflation, which has been exacerbated by increased demand and disrupted supply chains, as well as their role in stabilizing the economy. Das has been praised for his handling of the Indian economy during a period of global economic uncertainty. He has been credited with helping to keep inflation under control and with supporting economic growth.

It is to be noted that Das was conferred on the award of ‘Governor of the Year’ at London’s Central Banking Awards in June, 2023.

The grades used for rating are based on a scale from A to F for success in inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management. An “A” grade represents an excellent performance whereas “F” stands for outright failure, according to Global Finance magazine.

The Central Banker Report Cards, published annually by US-based Global Finance since 1994, grade the central bank governors of 101 key countries, territories and districts, including the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of Central African States and the Central Bank of West African States. “Fighting inflation, which has been fueled by pent-up demand and disrupted supply chains, has everyone turning to their central bankers for help,” said Global Finance founder and editorial director Joseph Giarraputo. “Global Finance’s annual Central Banker Report Cards celebrate those bank governors whose strategies outperformed their peers through originality, creativity and tenacity,” added Giarraputo.

Shaktikanta Das took over as RBI’s 25th governor, succeeding Urjit Patel, on December 12, 2018. Prior to this, Das had served in various prominent roles, including Secretary of Department of Revenue and Department of Economic Affairs in the Finance Ministry.
