Accused in the Mumbai air hostess murder case dies by suicide in lock-up

The accused in the Mumbai air hostess murder case has died by suicide in the lock up of Andheri Police station after he hanged himself using his own pants. The accused was arrested for killing the 23-year-old air hostess by slitting her throat inside her flat in Mumbai’s Marol area.

The air hostess identified as Rupal Ogrey, hailed from Chhattisgarh and came to Mumbai in April for training with Air India. Police arrested 40-year-old Vikram Athwal who was Ogrey’s residential society’s garbage collection staffer, less than 12 hours after the body was discovered on Sunday night in her flat at NG Complex on Krishanlal Marwah Marg in Marol.

The police during the probe also said that the woman lived with her sister and her sister’s boyfriend but the two of them left for their native place eight days before the incident. The police have said that they have informed the girl’s family about the incident. The police also said that they would be able to understand what actually happened a few hours before the murder on the basis of the medical reports, however, the police is still waiting for permission from the family to conduct the post mortem.

The incident came into light after the woman did not pick up calls from her family after which they contacted her friends in Mumbai to check up on her. When the family’s friends went there, they found the flat was locked from inside and no one responded to the doorbell after which they contacted the police and with their help opened the flat using a duplicate key. Inside, the victim was found lying with her throat slit. She was immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital where she was declared dead by the time she was brought to the hospital.
