India records highest ever tally of 1 lakh COVID19 cases in a single day while Maharashtra begins ‘almost lockdown’

Surpassing every country, India’s daily cases are now more than US & Brazil, 60% cases are from Maharashtra where Section 144 of CrPC and weekend lockdowns have been imposed.

India recorded 1,03,558 COVID-19 cases surpassed all countries in daily-spike and broke its own record of highest-one day tally throughout the pandemic which is certainly a severe health-crisis in the country especially in the state of Maharashtra which accounts for 60% of those cases.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a review meeting with high-level officials to review the recent rise in coronavirus cases as well as the nationwide vaccination drive on Sunday, asked central teams to visit Maharashtra and review the reasons for such a spike.

During the meeting, a detailed presentation was made which highlighted that there is an “alarming rate” of growth of Covid-19 cases and deaths in the country with 10 states contributing to more than 91% of cases and deaths due to COVID.

Meanwhile the Maharashtra government on Sunday announced new restrictions including a night curfew in the state and a “strict lockdown” over the weekends from Friday 8 pm to Monday 7 am amid an unprecedented surge in coronavirus cases.

The rules, which come into effect today, include a curfew from 8 pm to 7 am; a ban on gatherings of five or more throughout the day; malls, restaurants, bars and places of worship will be closed; home delivery and essential services will be allowed.

Industrial operations and construction activity will be allowed. Rules to control crowding in vegetable markets will be introduced. Film shoots will be allowed without crowds but theatres will be closed.

Maharashtra, where the numbers have been steadily going up, reported 57,074 new cases on Sunday. No other state has ever reported more than 12,000 cases in a day. Pune and Mumbai, the two worst-affected cities, detected 12,472 and 11,206 new cases respectively.

Registering a steady increase for the 26th day in row, the active cases surged to over 7.4 lakhs, accounting for 5.54 per cent of the total infections.  The recovery rate further dropped to 93.14 per cent, the data stated.
