Google lays off employees, Shifts some roles abroad

A small percentage of the impacted employment will go to Atlanta, Chicago, Mexico City, Dublin, India, and Atlanta's investment centres

Alphabet-owned Google has laid off an undisclosed number of workers as a part of the latest cost-cutting measures taken by the internet behemoths, a company spokesperson announced on Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, as reported by Reuters.

The spokesperson specified that the layoffs are not company-wide, even if the number of employees or team impacted is unspecified, and affected employees can apply for internal roles.

Fears that layoffs may persist as businesses struggle with economic uncertainty are heightened by the layoffs, resulting from a wave of job cutbacks throughout Google and the internet and media sectors this year.

“Throughout the second half of 2023 and into 2024, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, remove layers, and align their resources to their biggest product priorities,” the spokesperson added.

A tiny portion of the affected jobs will relocate to the company’s investment centers in Chicago, Mexico City, Atlanta, and Dublin, India, and Atlanta, according to a Business Insider article, by Ruth Porat, Google’s finance boss, to increase growth in these areas, which was informed to the former’s colleagues via email.

As to a report published on Wednesday by Business Insider, Google’s real estate and finance departments have experienced disruptions that have impacted many teams of employees. It further stated that Google’s revenue cash operations, business services, and treasury departments are among the impacted financial teams.

In January, Google laid off hundreds of employees from various departments, including its hardware, engineering, and assistant teams as it increased funding and expanded its artificial intelligence services. According to reports, company CEO Sundar Pichai warned staff members to anticipate additional layoffs at the beginning of the year.
