Wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya bags 2nd silver medal for India this Olympics
Champion Indian Wrestler Ravi Dahiya lost his GOLD MEDAL bout to Russia’s Zavur Yuguev, but bagged a Silver medal for the country.
Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya bagged the silver medal after losing in the final of men’s 57kg freestyle category to Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) Zavur Uguev on Thursday. This is India’s fifth medal at the Tokyo Olympics and the second silver of the campaign.
Ravi Kumar is the fifth Indian wrestler after KD Jadhav, Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, and Sakshi Malik to finish on the Olympic podium.
“I do feel good for the silver but I could have done better. There were probably some shortcomings today. I tried my best to win the gold but missed out by a small margin,” Ravi Kumar Dahiya told journalists over the phone.
The wrestling centre at Chhatrasal stadium in Haryana where Dahiya was enrolled has produced a number of internationals, of whom the most famous are double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, and Yogeshwar Dutt, who won bronze in London. Dahiya’s younger brother Pankaj is also training to be a Greco-Roman wrestler at Chhatrasal stadium.
Despite facing a financial crunch, his father Rakesh Dahiya sent his son to train there. It meant he would travel for an hour every day for the next 10 years to give his son milk and fruits, which are an important part of a wrestler’s diet.
Dahiya is the third Olympian from Nahri after Mahavir Singh (1980 Moscow, 1984 Los Angeles) and Amit Dahiya (London 2012). But he’s the first medallist.
