Protesting wrestlers meet Anurag Thakur, defer protests till 15 June

The wrestlers met with Anurag Thakur for talks regarding the protests and arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh.

Days after the meeting between the Home minister, Amit Shah and the protesting wretlers, the government said that they are still ready for talks following which the protesting wrestlers met with Anurag Thakur on Wednesday.

During the meeting which lasted almost six hours, various issues were discussed by the wrestlers with Anurag Thakur. During which the Union Sports Minister said that the probe against WFI (Wrestling Federation of India) chief Brij Bhushan Singh will be done by 15th of June.

Subsequently on the request of the Sports Minister, the protests have been suspended till the 15th of June. The wrestlers have also said that if probe is not done by the 15th, then they will continue their protests till they get justice.

The government has also agreed to take back the FIRs which were filed against the wrestlers.

The Sports Minister also declared that the WFI elections will be done by the 30th of June. On this the protesting wrestlers have demanded that Brij Bhushan Singh and his associates not be allowed to run in the elections as he has already been elected thrice as the WFI chief.

The Sports Minister has also promised on the formation of an Internal Complaint Committee of the WFI, which will be headed by a woman.

Many of the political parties and farmer leaders including Rakesh Tikait have also taken part in this protest. While they claim it is to support the women wrestlers, some say it is a way to gain mileage against the ruling BJP government ahead of the 2024 general elections.
