India wins first silver medal at Tokyo Olympics on day 1: Mirabai Chanu creates history

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won India its first medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games. She earned a silver medal at the weightlifting (49kg) event while many other athletes advanced with wins.

India’s Mirabai Chanu has won the first medal for India at the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games 2020. She won the Silver medal in Weightlifting (49 kg category).

With this, the 26-year-old becomes the only 2nd Indian weightlifter ever to win an Olympic medal. India with 1 silver medal at rank third on the Tokyo Olympics 2020 medal table.

In the last edition, the 2016 Rio Olympics, India had managed to win only 1 silver medal (PV Sindhu in badminton) and 1 bronze medal (Sakshi Malik in wrestling).

Hailing from Manipur’s capital Imphal, Mirabai Chanu first showed her mettle in international competitions when she won the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow at the age of 20.

However, this was followed by disappointment two years later when she failed to life the weight in any of her three attempts in clean and jerk section, thus becoming one of just two lifters who did not finish in the event.
