Legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona has passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest on Wednesday, Argentine media reported. The 1986 World Cup-winner was 60-years-old.

Earlier this month, Maradona had successfully undergone surgery for a blood clot on his brain. As per international media reports, Maradona died at his home in Buenos Aires just days after turning 60. Argentina has announced a 3-day national mourning in the country.

Maradona will forever be known for his “Hand of God” goal against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final in Mexico, when he appeared to use his hand to push the ball into the net before later swerving through the English defenders for a memorable second goal that sealed victory.

Years of drug use, overeating and alcoholism truncated a stellar career and altered his appearance from the lithe athlete who could slalom effortlessly through teams to a bloated addict who nearly died of cocaine-induced heart failure in 2000.

But he reinvented himself in a stunning comeback in 2008 as coach of the Argentina team, persuading managers that with sheer charisma he could inspire the team to victory, despite a lack of coaching experience.

In Argentina, he was worshipped as ‘El Dios’ – The God – partly a play on words on his number 10 shirt, ‘El Diez.’
