Glacier burst in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath on India-China border district, govt issues alert

The glacier burst reportedly took place due to heavy snowfall in the region. There is no report of any damage or loss of lives or untoward incident has been reported so far.

A glacier has burst near Uttarakhand’s Joshimath on India-China border, ANI reported quoting Colonel Manish Kapil, Commander, Border Road Task Force. There is no report of any damage or loss of lives so far.

Senior officials of the Border Road Organisation (BRO) are trying to establish contact with workers who were involved in road-construction activities in the area.

Army sources say the glacier burst took place near the post of 8 battalion ITBP between Malari and Sumna village near the BRO office. The Central Army Command is carrying out rescue operations.

In February, a glacier broke off at Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, leading to a massive flood in the Dhauli Ganga river and causing large-scale devastation in the upper reaches of the ecologically fragile Himalayas.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand government has issued an alert following news of the glacier burst.

Sources in the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said water level in the Rishi Ganga river has risen by two feet. They said there is no information of any untoward incident so far.

The sources said heavy snowfall in the region in the past few days resulted in a glacier burst near Sumna and Malari villages. Local authorities are taking stock of the situation.
