After Black and White Fungus, now first case of Yellow Fungus reported in UP

The symptoms of yellow fungus include lethargy, weight loss, low appetite, or no appetite at all.

Amid the unprecedented rise in the deadly Black Fungus, and more recently White Fungus cases, a new danger – Yellow Fungus infection which is said to be more dangerous has now been reported in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

The patient was diagnosed by Dr B.P Tyagi, an ENT (Ear-Nose-Throat) specialist in the district. The 45-year-old resident of Ghaziabad’s Sanjay Nagar, is also already suffering from Black and White Fungus infections. He had been undergoing Covid treatment for the past two months and recovering from it as well. However, in the last four days or so the patient developed swelling in his face due to which he was unable to open his eyes. Then the patient began bleeding from his nose and in urine. He was rushed to the hospital where examination revealed that it was a case of Yellow Fungus.

Yellow Fungus Symptoms:

Like other fungal infections, the Yellow Fungus is caused by environmental molds and unsanitary conditions.

The symptoms of yellow fungus are said to be lethargy, weight loss, low appetite, or no appetite at all. Subsequently, more severe symptoms of yellow fungus can also be the leakage of pus. It also reportedly affects the healing process of wounds and slows it down. It also results in sunken eyes and organ failure and eventually leads to necrosis.

Yellow fungus is a fatal disease because it starts internally unlike other fungal infections wherein the symptoms are visible. This trait makes it difficult to identify the infection and delays treatment until the latter stages of the disease.

Yellow Fungus Prevention:

  •  Keep your surroundings as clean as possible.
  • Keep the humidity of your home under check as excessive humidity promotes bacteria growth.
  • Coronavirus-positive patients must immediately start treatment so complications like yellow fungus do not develop.

Yellow or other fungal infections being talked of right now aren’t exactly new or rare. Currently, Amphotericin B injection, which is an antifungal medicine is the only known treatment therapy for fighting the infection.

Of late, cases of Black Fungus or Mucormycosis have been on the rise among recovering Covid patients in various states. Close to 10,000 cases have been reported across the country. Mucormycosis is being found more in cases where Covid is compounded with steroids and diabetes. The infection has been declared as an epidemic in many states already. The symptoms associated with Black Fungus include headache, facial pain, nasal congestion, loss of vision, swelling in cheeks, and black crusts in the nose.

Relatively lesser, but still significant cases of White Fungus have also been reported, affecting parts of the body, including lungs, nails, skin, stomach, kidney, brain, mouth, and vagina. Immunocompromised patients, patients who have been on steroid medication for long, diabetics, cancer patients, patients who have undergone organ transplants are at a greater risk of contracting the infection. Symptoms for the same include cough, fever, diarrhea, dark spots on the lungs, and reduced oxygen level.
