8 killed after BJP minister’s convoy run over protestors in Lakhimpur, who later lynched 4 BJP workers to death | WATCH

Minister Ajay Mishra has denied that his son, Ashish Mishra, was linked to the violence, but FIR filed against him and others for murder.

Atleast 9 people have been killed in violence in UP’s Lakhimpur where 4 farmers, 4 BJP workers were killed in clashes. FIR filed against  Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son for allegedly running a car over protesting farmers.

“The farmers had planned to gherao the helipad to stop the arrival of the ministers. Once that ended and most people were on way back, three cars came… and mowed down the farmers… one farmer died on the spot and another in the hospital,” said Dr Darshan Pal, a leader of the farmers’ union, adding that the minister’s son was in the car.

Minister Ajay Mishra has denied that his son, Ashish Mishra, was linked to the violence.

“My son wasn’t present at the spot. There were miscreants who attacked workers with sticks and swords. Had my son been there, he wouldn’t have come out alive,” Mr Mishra, the junior Home Minister, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. “My son was present at the venue of the (Deputy Chief Minister’s) event… all through, I was accompanying the deputy chief minister,” he said.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the happenings, and said, “Such incidents are unfortunate. The government will ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated and the involvement of anti-social elements is brought to light. We will take strict action against those involved.” Internet services were shut in Lakhimpur as tension prevails in the aftermath of the incident. Borders around Lucknow were also sealed on all the roads leading to Lakhimpur.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav has been detained after he was sitting on a dharna outside his residence. Earlier, he was stopped by the UP Police from going to Lakhimpur Kheri similar to Priyanka Gandhi.
