UK finds ‘new variant’ of Coronavirus, US starts Vaccination while India records lowest COVID-19 cases in 5 months

More than 1,000 cases of a new variant of the coronavirus have been identified, mainly in southeast England, according to British Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who added that the variant may be associated with a rapid rise in infection levels in the area.

The British government said on Monday that London will move into England’s highest tier of Covid-19 restrictions, citing an exponential rise in infection rates as one of the world’s richest cities struggles to contain the disease.

The United States kicked off a mass vaccination drive Monday hoping to turn the tide on the world’s biggest coronavirus outbreak, as the nation’s death toll passed a staggering 300,000.

The start of the desperately awaited vaccine program coincided with several European countries announcing new lockdowns amid spiraling infections, highlighting how the road to ending the global pandemic is still long.

New York nurse Sandra Lindsay became the first person in America to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech shot, live on television, six days after Britain launched the West’s vaccine campaign against Covid-19.

India recorded 22,065 new cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the last 24 hours, Union health ministry’s dashboard showed on Tuesday morning. With this, the nationwide tally has reached 99,06,165.

This is the lowest daily count of Covid-19 cases since July 6.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) organised a virtual session on Covid-19 on Monday where Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Vikas Swarup said that India emerged as a net provider of health security and successfully shouldered its responsibility as the pharmacy of the world.
