1 out of every 5 people being tested in Delhi now covid positive

The national capital is seeing a positivity rate of 19.20 percent, the highest in past seven months.

While people have become evenly relaxed about the possibilities of the re-emergence of Covid, Delhi is now witnessing what not many imagined as the number of active cases has been on a steep rise and if the same continues in the forthcoming days, then another wave is very much on the cards.

The health department of Delhi on Tuesday reported a positivity rate of 19.20 percent, meaning every 5th person being tested for covid is now positive. Owing to the recent spike in cases the number of active cases stands at 6,867, of which 5,387 patients are currently under home isolation.

Conspicuously the pandemic is far from over. Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena reiterated, “We are witnessing a rise in COVID-19 infections, consistently high positivity and cases of reinfection. It is essential that we realize that the pandemic is far from over. I appeal to all to strictly adhere to COVID-19 appropriate behaviour. We cannot afford to let our guards down.”

At a time when people were unwilling or least bothered about getting their booster doses of the vaccine even after numerous appeals and schemes rolled by the government, the resurfacing of a hike in positive cases surely makes it important to get the precautionary shots now more than ever, as many of the new as well as those who have been reinfected, are those patients who have not yet taken the third dose of vaccine.

Office of Deputy CM reported that almost 90 percent of the positive patients admitted in hospitals currently are doubly vaccinated, however, only a mere 10 percent took the booster dose. This is crystal clear proof that the third dose is helping tremendously against COVID-19.

Meanwhile, even with the rise in the positivity rate, Delhi’s government has not yet implemented the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) since hospital admissions are low. But sooner than later the country’s capital may find itself under high alert as the total number of cases reported till date went up to 19,86,739 and the death toll now stands at 26,392 in the metropolitan.
