Replacing Azim Premji, Shiv Nadar becomes ‘India’s most generous’: Donated ₹3 crore/day and a total of ₹1,161 crores

Software giant HCL’s founder Shiv Nadar has reclaimed the title of being ‘India’s Most Generous’ with an yearly donation of ₹1,161 crore as per the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022.

The 77-year-old tycoon, who was placed second after Wipro’s Azim Premji last year, reclaimed the top spot with a daily donation of ₹3 crore per day. Premji was on the second spot this year with an annual donation of ₹484 crore.

Asia’s richest man, Gautam Adani, came in seventh with a donation of ₹190 crore, while Mukesh Ambani took the third spot with ₹411 crore donations.

The number of individuals donating more than ₹100 crore in a year has grown to 15, from just two in 2017-18. The number of individuals who have donated over ₹50 crore has grown four-fold, from five to 20, the research by Hurun India and EdelGive Foundation showed.

Going by cities, Mumbai led the list with 3% of philanthropists, followed by New Delhi with 16%. Bengaluru was in the third spot with 13%.

The Pharma Industry has the largest number of philanthropists on the list, accounting for 20%, followed by the chemicals and petrochemicals sector with 11% of philanthropists.

The annual ranking of the most generous individuals in India was released in an attempt to highlight India’s remarkable philanthropists and to capture the growing importance of individual givers in India’s philanthropic landscape towards nation-building.
